We all have skin. And as people with skin, that means that we have to take some time for ourselves every so often and take care of that skin.
My favorite way to get 15 minutes of “me time” and take care of my skin is to treat it to a Perfectly Posh face mask treatment. I do these up to 5 times per week, depending on the type of week my skin has had.
There are two different types of face mask treatments:
“On” Masks and “Off” Masks
The difference between these masks may seem slight, but it can be tricky to decide which type of mask you need, how often, and why.
The first step is deciding what results you want from a mask. Do you need something that is exfoliating? Detoxifying? Moisturizing? Are you looking for anti-aging effects or something that will help even your tone?
Usually, I am looking for a detox treatment (after camping, working out, or being out in the elements for any period of time) or a tightening/brightening treatment (I’m a 30-something mom of 3, I need all the help I can get to look less tired!).
Once you have decided what type of effect you want, the next thing to do is determine your skin type. Dry, oily, and combination are the most common skin types and many people do use more than one mask treatment at a time to treat different facial areas.
I have combo skin, which means that I get the T-Zone oiliness over my chin, nose, and forehead. These are areas that I will hit with an Off Mask while I hydrate my cheeks with an On Mask.
Knowing what type of skin you have and what results you desire from your mask treatment are going to be vital in helping you decide which type of mask to use.
Off Masks are the types of masks that remove things from your face: dirt, oil, toxins, pollution, and dead layers of skin.
Off Masks can be used up to 3 times a week, but if you have particularly dry or sensitive skin start with once a week. You definitely don’t want to overuse Off Masks! You can, however, treat yourself to a double whammy facial and follow up an Off Mask with an On Mask for a cooling and restorative effect!
Skin types that require more frequent Off Mask treatments include oily and combination skin. Follow your Off Mask with an On Mask or a moisturizer that is not oil based. Focus on vitamins, caffeine, and exfoliation when choosing your Off Mask.
If you have sensitive skin, steer clear of the Calling All Fairies and Pineapple Pick Me Up and opt instead for Envy This, Cackle Spackle, or Go West for a deep, but more gentle, clean.
Off Masks can leave your skin feeling inflamed because of the hard work they’ve done. Redness and tingling during and after an Off Mask is perfectly normal; itchiness, intense burning, and any other side effects that are persistent can be an indication of an allergy and you should discontinue use. Always test Off Masks on the inside of your wrist before use if you are prone to sensitivities.
On Masks are the types of masks that leave something behind, whether that be moisture, nutrients, or softness.
On Masks can be used as often as your skin will tolerate them. I have used them up to 4 times a week when needed – particularly moisturizing masks in wintertime! You can also use your On Mask after an Off Mask treatment to restore moisture – using a product like I’m Turning Blueberry or Apricots Overnight after Cackle Spackle or Calling All Fairies will restore the moisture that was depleted during the detox/cleaning phase.
No matter the type of mask you use, you will want to follow it up with a good moisturizer. The moisturizer you choose will be determined greatly by what type of skin you have. The dryer your skin is, the more thick and intense a moisturizer you will need. Dry skin types will do well with the Never Grow Up Face Creme or one of the moisturizing oils. If you have naturally oily skin, you will probably want to steer clear of the oil-based moisturizers like Call It A Night and Dawn On Me and choose instead Moisture 911 which is rich with Vitamin C and Lavender to help balance your skin’s natural levels. As a combo skin girl, I mix it up quite often! Daytime moisture is taken care of with Moisture 911 (followed with a good facial sunscreen!) and at night I treat my skin with Never Grow Up Face Creme.
