Ashley Does: What Is Beauty, Really?

What is beauty, to you?

I presented this question to my friends and family and got some pretty amazing answers.

Do you know what not a single person mentioned?

Outward appearance.

No one mentioned a dress size or perfect makeup or fashionable clothes.

Beauty, it turns out, is a mindset. It is an attitude. It is a verb. (It is food trucks, according to my friend Kevin.)

Beauty is being sure of yourself, and knowing that you are worthy.

Beauty is being a good, kind, generous person.

Beauty is a small rock, preciously handed over from child to parent as a beloved gift.

Beauty is patience and joy.

Beauty is positivity and selflessness.

Beauty is being a good, supportive friend.

I know you are reading this thinking, Hey! I am a lot of those things!

And it’s true, friend. You are a lot of those things. Even on days that you wake up with crazy hair and dull skin and nothing fits and you just feel so blah – you are beautiful just because you are you.

I encourage you to remind yourself of that. Especially on days that you feel ugly inside and out – and we all have those days – take the time to fill your cup. Because the road to beauty starts with self-love and self-care.

Beauty starts with remembering that you are all of those things on that list; that you are beautiful because of who you are, not because of what you look like. And remembering that the ugly days will pass but who you are – that’s not changing or going anywhere.

There is no magic potion that will make you beautiful – you already are. Sometimes, though, you need a little reminding, a little bit of encouragement, to be able to see what so many others already do.

I’d love for you to take a moment today and think about something that makes you beautiful. Leave a comment with your thoughts – and join us over in the Pretty Things Lounge and see what we are saying about ourselves and each other there!
